Gerta Keller: Research Team & Collaborators

Our multi-disciplinary Deccan Team of investigators.

Research on the Deccan Traps in India began in 2006 investigating a potential link between the massive volcanic eruptions and the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. An international team of collaborators participated, including many Indian scientists. The team was very successful in discovering and documenting the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (KTB) mass extinction for the first time in intertrappean sediments of the Krishna-Godvari Basin and in Central India. Research team on Deccan geochronology and global biological, geochemical, climatic and environmental effects of Deccan volcanism. This research started in 2011 and has yielded exceptional results identifying global biological and geochemical markers directly linked to Deccan volcanism. High-precision U-Pb dating has yielded exceptional results in dating the main phase of Deccan eruptions. This research is ongoing and has the potential to solve the over three decades old controversy over what caused the KTB mass extinction including the dinosaurs, identify the actual kill mechanism, provide age control on the rate of volcanic gas emissions and link Deccan volcanism to ocean acidification and climate change.
